Choguel Maiga, Mali’s former Prime Minister, has been accused of embezzlement by the country’s public spending oversight authority.

The audit report cites numerous instances of misused funds during Maiga’s tenure, with allegations of covering up or directly benefiting from the misappropriation.

The report highlights “undue expenditure on staff” between 2020 and 2023, including nearly €20,000 spent on phone subscriptions and misallocated equipment, such as WiFi and computers, originally intended for schools.

Maiga served as Prime Minister from June 2021 until his dismissal in November 2024 by junta leader Col Assimi Goïta. His removal followed his public criticism of the junta’s unclear approach to transitioning back to democracy.

While Maiga has yet to address these recent allegations, he previously asserted his “clear conscience” when the audit began its investigation.
