Dar es Salaam – The Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) has launched a new beekeeping tourism initiative in Kalambo district, located in the Rukwa region of the southern highlands.

This initiative aims to introduce tourists to the fascinating world of honey production while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

To support this initiative, the government has established a dedicated beekeeping farm and distributed 500 beehives to local communities in the Kalambo district.

“A tourist would be exposed to beekeeping activities, including honey production, in the farm where one would also learn the ecology of beekeeping,” explained Daniel Dotto, a senior official with the TFS.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to diversify the tourism sector and showcase the country’s rich biodiversity.

“Introducing beekeeping tourism is part of our ongoing efforts to support the government in promoting its abundant tourist attractions,” stated Ibrahim Mkiwa, TFS chief conservation officer.

Tourism plays a vital role in the Tanzanian economy, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, tourism accounts for 17.2 percent of Tanzania’s GDP and an impressive 29 percent of Zanzibar’s GDP. Furthermore, the sector provides employment opportunities for 1.5 million people, both directly and indirectly.

This new beekeeping tourism initiative not only offers a unique and enriching experience for tourists but also has the potential to generate income for local communities, promote sustainable livelihoods, and contribute to the conservation of Tanzania’s valuable natural resources.
