Egypt Boat Sinking
Rescuers have saved at least 28 people after the tourist boat, Sea Story, capsized off Egypt’s Red Sea coast near Marsa Alam on Monday morning.
Authorities continue the search for 17 missing individuals, including foreign tourists. The boat, carrying 45 people, encountered trouble during a multi-day diving trip, sparking a coordinated rescue operation.
Sea Story Boat’s Tragic Fate
The Sea Story had set sail from Port Ghalib in Marsa Alam on November 24, with plans to return to Hurghada Marina on November 29. Among the 45 onboard were 31 tourists of various nationalities and 14 crew members.
Authorities received a distress call at 5:30 a.m. local time (03:30 GMT), alerting them to the incident.
Governor Amr Hanafi confirmed that helicopters airlifted some survivors and rushed them to receive medical attention. The Egyptian navy and armed forces joined the rescue mission to locate the remaining individuals.
Weather Warnings Ignored Amid Dangerous Conditions
The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had previously warned of rough seas in the Red Sea and Mediterranean, with waves reaching 3-4 meters (10-13 feet) in the Red Sea and even higher in the Mediterranean. They advised ceasing maritime activities on Sunday and Monday. Nevertheless, the Sea Story proceeded with its voyage.
The boat reportedly sank near a coral reef in northern Marsa Alam, an area renowned for its vibrant marine life and coral reefs, which make the Red Sea a world-class diving destination crucial to Egypt’s tourism sector.
Rescue Efforts Intensify as Investigation Looms
Authorities have emphasized the urgency of the ongoing rescue operation. Governor Hanafi urged the public to avoid the accident area to allow rescue teams to work unimpeded. Meanwhile, questions arise about how the vessel received clearance to sail amid adverse weather forecasts.
