Authorities in eastern Congo have reported a brutal attack by extremist rebels linked to the Islamic State group, leaving at least nine people dead, including an 8-month-old baby and a 14-year-old girl.
The tragic incident, which occurred in Tenambo village in North Kivu province on Tuesday evening, also saw homes set ablaze and three individuals kidnapped.
Colonel Mak Hazukay, spokesperson for the Congolese army, urged residents to stay vigilant and temporarily avoid isolated areas.
Local deputy mayor Jean De Die Kambale Kibwana confirmed the attack, describing the rebels’ actions as a grave threat to the community’s safety.
Violence Escalates Amid Eastern Congo Rebel Attacks
Eastern Congo has faced decades of turmoil as more than 120 armed groups vie for control of land, power, and mineral resources. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which carried out this latest attack, has become one of the most violent factions.
Their operations have spread from North Kivu to Goma, the region’s main city, and into neighboring Ituri province, leaving destruction in their wake.
Recent reports from human rights organizations, including the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office, have documented hundreds of killings and abductions linked to the ADF.
These atrocities often target children and vulnerable populations, underscoring the urgent need for action to address the crisis.

The impact of these relentless attacks goes beyond immediate casualties. In Tenambo, families are grappling with the aftermath of destroyed homes and lost loved ones.
For years, the people of eastern Congo have endured mass killings, widespread abductions, and persistent fear.
The United Nations continues to call for accountability for serious human rights violations committed by armed groups, including the ADF. Despite these efforts, the crisis remains dire, with local communities caught in the crossfire of unending violence.
As the situation in eastern Congo deteriorates, one question looms large: What strategies can effectively curb the persistent violence and bring peace to the region?
