A new political alliance may be taking shape in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as former President Joseph Kabila and opposition leader Moïse Katumbi unite in their criticism of current President Félix Tshisekedi.
Sources close to the two leaders revealed that they met in Ethiopia shortly before Christmas. Following their meeting, they released a joint statement expressing shared concerns and goals.
The statement denounced the worsening security crisis in the DRC, where M23 rebels have seized significant territory in the eastern region.
Kabila and Katumbi condemned the presence of illegal armed groups and called for collective political action to counter what they described as an emerging dictatorship under Tshisekedi’s administration.
Interestingly, both leaders face accusations from the government in Kinshasa of collaborating with Rwanda, which the UN has accused of supporting the M23 rebels.
This apparent alliance marks a significant turn for Kabila and Katumbi, who were last seen together in 2022 at a DRC forum where they set aside their differences with a symbolic handshake.
