Prominent Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye has been hospitalized following a hunger strike that began last week, according to reports from an allied lawmaker and local media. Besigye, a long-standing critic of President Yoweri Museveni, has been detained at a maximum-security facility in Kampala since November 2024.
Detention and Charges
In November 2024, Besigye was reportedly “kidnapped” in neighboring Kenya, where he had traveled, and forcibly transported back to Uganda. He was subsequently charged in the military’s General Court Martial with offenses including illegal possession of firearms. These charges have been a point of contention, especially after Uganda’s Supreme Court ruled last month that prosecuting civilians in military courts is unconstitutional.

Health Deterioration and Hospitalization
Besigye’s health has deteriorated due to his hunger strike, prompting authorities to transfer him to a clinic in Kampala’s Bugolobi suburb. Lawmaker Francis Mwijukye, an ally of Besigye, stated on social media that Besigye was brought to the clinic under heavy security and was seen being pushed in a wheelchair. Family members have expressed concern, describing his condition as critical.
Government Response
In response to public outcry and legal pressures, Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced that the government is expediting the transfer of Besigye’s case to civilian courts, effectively ending his military prosecution. This move aligns with the recent Supreme Court ruling against the trial of civilians in military courts.

Public and Political Reactions
The situation has sparked widespread reactions from the public and political figures. Notably, fellow opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine has joined the chorus of voices demanding Besigye’s release and access to adequate medical care. The medical community has also expressed concern over Besigye’s health and the circumstances of his detention.
This development highlights ongoing tensions in Uganda’s political landscape, particularly concerning the treatment of opposition figures and the legal processes governing their prosecution.
