Sidama, Ethiopia – A tragic road accident in southern Ethiopia has claimed the lives of at least 71 people.

A passenger truck carrying a large number of passengers plunged into a river near the town of Sidama, approximately 300 kilometers south of the capital, Addis Ababa.

The accident occurred on Sunday evening, with initial reports suggesting that the truck veered off the road and plunged into the river due to excessive speed and a sharp curve.

The Sidama Regional Health Bureau confirmed the tragic toll, stating that 68 males and three females have been confirmed dead. Five individuals remain in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment at Bona General Hospital.

Local authorities, including the Sidama Police Commission, are investigating the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest the truck may have been overloaded, a contributing factor to the tragic accident.

This latest tragedy underscores the significant safety challenges facing Ethiopia’s road network. Poor road conditions and a lack of adequate safety measures contribute to a high rate of road accidents in the country.
