Bamako, Mali – At least 69 people, including 25 Malian nationals, have tragically lost their lives in a devastating shipwreck off the coast of Morocco.

The incident occurred on December 19th when an overcrowded boat carrying approximately 80 migrants capsized while attempting to reach Spain.

This tragic event underscores the perilous nature of the Atlantic migration route, which has witnessed a significant surge in migrant crossings this year.

The route, known for its high mortality rates, has claimed the lives of nearly 5,000 individuals in the first five months of 2024 alone, according to the activist group Walking Borders.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the desperate situations that drive individuals to undertake such perilous journeys and the urgent need for international cooperation to address the root causes of migration and provide safe and legal pathways for those seeking a better life.
