Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to construct fuel storage tanks in Namibia to hold at least 1.6 million barrels of gasoline and diesel. According to two sources familiar with the project, the facility will be used to supply refined fuel to several Southern African countries, including Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with potential expansion into southern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The move marks a significant step in Dangote’s strategy to dominate Africa’s refined fuel market and reshape regional energy trade. The refinery, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, began operations last year. Built at a cost of $20 billion by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, it is Africa’s largest single-train refinery and is already positioning itself as a key exporter of petroleum products.

A second source confirmed that construction of the storage tanks would begin shortly in the port city of Walvis Bay. The Namibia Ports Authority also confirmed the development, stating that the tanks will be located within the Walvis Bay harbor area.

This project is part of a broader strategy to increase Dangote’s export reach. Last month, a source revealed that a Dangote gasoline shipment was headed to Asia, marking the refinery’s first sale of gasoline outside West Africa.

At full capacity, the Dangote refinery is expected to meet Nigeria’s domestic fuel demand and export the surplus to other regions. With Nigeria already reducing its dependence on imported processed fuels, the refinery’s expansion into Southern Africa could boost fuel security for neighboring countries and offer a more reliable source of supply.

The construction of storage infrastructure in Namibia reinforces the refinery’s ambition to be a continental powerhouse in refined fuel production and distribution, creating new trade routes and strengthening regional economic ties in the energy sector.
