The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reported significant progress in its fight against the M23 rebel group, with the Congolese army reclaiming key towns in North and South Kivu provinces.
Spokesperson Guillaume Ndjike Kaiko stated that while observing the ceasefire, the military has the right to defend civilians and respond to aggression, particularly from alleged Rwandan involvement.
The M23, a predominantly Tutsi rebel group, has been active since 2012 and recently re-emerged in 2021, capturing large areas in eastern Congo.
Accusations from the United Nations about Rwanda’s support for the M23 rebels have been met with consistent denials from Kigali. Rwandan President Paul Kagame has called for peaceful negotiations between the DRC and M23, advocating for a resolution to the crisis.
The conflict has had devastating humanitarian consequences, displacing hundreds of thousands and leaving the international community deeply concerned.
Despite ongoing challenges, the Congolese government remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty and protecting its citizens.
