Commonwealth observers in Ghana have started monitoring the nation’s 2024 elections. Their mission began with observing a special vote held ahead of the December 7 polls.

This early voting process allowed security officials, media personnel, and election officers to cast their ballots in preparation for the general election.

Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi, Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) and former President of Botswana, urged all stakeholders to uphold democratic practices.

Speaking in Accra, he stated, “Ghana’s democracy and years of political stability have been a stabilizing influence in the sub-region. A peaceful and credible conduct of elections will continue to solidify Ghana’s reputation as a stable democracy in the region.”

Role of Commonwealth Observers in Ghana’s Election

The Commonwealth observers in Ghana are engaging stakeholders across various sectors. Their work includes assessing electoral readiness and the overall election environment.

The team consists of 17 experts from different Commonwealth regions, with expertise in law, human rights, media, and electoral management.

Dr. Masisi emphasized the importance of their presence, noting, “These elections are particularly noteworthy for the Commonwealth, as they mark the final major election in a year dubbed the global year of elections.”

Since arriving on November 28, the team has met with the Electoral Commission, government representatives, political parties, civil society groups, and international observers.

Commonwealth Observers in Ghana to Assess Key Electoral Factors

From December 5, the Commonwealth observers in Ghana will deploy across the country. Their assessment will cover key aspects of the electoral process, such as transparency, inclusivity, and fairness.

They will monitor voting, counting, and result declarations while meeting local stakeholders in different regions.

Dr. Masisi stressed the global significance of these elections, calling on everyone involved to demonstrate accountability to the people.

He explained, “Ghana’s elections are an opportunity to showcase its strong democratic principles and further its influence as a beacon of stability.”

What to Expect from their Observation Mision in the Election

The Commonwealth Observer Group plans to release an interim statement on December 9. This statement will present their initial findings. Afterward, the group will compile a detailed report for the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

The final report will also be shared with stakeholders and the public.

In addition to observing the elections, the team will examine whether voters feel free to express their will.

They will assess the fairness of media coverage and evaluate if election results reflect voter intentions. Their efforts aim to build trust in Ghana’s democratic system.

As the Commonwealth observers in Ghana work to ensure a credible election, they are reinforcing democratic accountability. With their findings, they hope to strengthen public confidence in the election process.
