ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia—A Chinese medical team has initiated a free cataract surgery program at Tirunesh Beijing Hospital in Ethiopia’s capital.
Dubbed the China-Ethiopia Brightness Journey, the program aims to restore vision for over 500 patients, with 80 individuals already benefiting from successful procedures.
The Chinese delegation, consisting of 10 skilled ophthalmologists and nurses, will operate over the next 20 days. In addition to performing surgeries, the team will train local medical staff in advanced eye treatment techniques, enhancing Ethiopia’s healthcare capabilities.
One of the program’s beneficiaries, Amsale Belay, shared her gratitude for regaining her sight after years of unsuccessful treatments. “I’m so indebted to the medical team. For over two and a half years, I sought solutions but was told there was no hope. Now, I have full hope,” she said.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Mekdes Daba, underscored the program’s impact during its launch. “Through this project, we’re not just helping patients but building skills among local healthcare professionals. Our community gains valuable shared experiences, and we deeply appreciate this initiative,” she remarked.
Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Chen Hai, praised the program as a testament to the enduring partnership between the two nations. “The ‘Bright Journey’ exemplifies our deep-rooted friendship and strategic collaboration,” he said.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in Ethiopia, impacting over five million people, according to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health.
