Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, former Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has been appointed as the acting Regional Director for Africa at the World Health Organization (WHO). The announcement was made on February 4, 2025, during the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Ihekweazu succeeds Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who recently concluded her term as Regional Director. His extensive experience includes over two decades in senior public health roles across various national institutes, such as the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the UK’s Health Protection Agency, and Germany’s Robert Koch Institute.
A new Regional Director for Africa is scheduled to be elected in May 2025.
