Millions Celebrate Africa’s Biggest Street Party at Calabar Carnival
Christmas revelers thronged Calabar, the southern port city of Nigeria, this weekend for its annual carnival, celebrated as “Africa’s biggest street party.”

The vibrant parade featured dancers and floats showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of Nigeria’s many ethnic groups. Highlights included performers donning colorful costumes, from glittering feathered headdresses to outfits inspired by historical symbols like the Atlantic slave trade manillas and British West African pennies.

The month-long December festivities attract up to two million visitors to Cross River State, with this year marking the carnival’s 20th anniversary.

Grace Job, a carnival attendee, marveled at the spectacle, saying, “We are seeing different designs, different costumes. The energy is so much.”

This year, over 14 bands competed in dynamic performances as Afrobeats hits resonated from massive speakers, fueling the citywide dance floors.

The University of Calabar troupe added an academic flair with their logo-printed costumes, while Calas Vegas claimed the coveted “Best Carnival Band” title for the second year in a row.

The celebrations also included a Friday night concert headlined by Nigerian music stars Runtown and Iyanya, further cementing Calabar Carnival’s reputation as a cultural and entertainment hub.

Cross River State regards the carnival as a cornerstone for boosting tourism, aiming to draw visitors from across Nigeria and the global diaspora.

With its electrifying energy and celebration of cultural heritage, Calabar Carnival continues to unite and inspire millions.
