In an exciting and groundbreaking finale, Bridget Mangwandi, at just 20 years old, claimed the top spot in MasterChef South Africa season five, winning R1 million in prize money.
Her victory marked a historic achievement as the youngest-ever winner of the franchise and Mzansi’s first Black female MasterChef.
The Final Showdown: Mangwandi vs. Shamshum
The ultimate head-to-head battle saw Bridget Mangwandi face off against 23-year-old Nabila Shamshum, a school secretary from Johannesburg. Both chefs impressed with their culinary creations, but it was Mangwandi’s near-perfect dishes that earned her the title.
Shamshum, who had already triumphed in both the quarter and semi-finals, took second place, while Durban-born Chanel Brink (34) secured the third runner-up spot.
Moral Support and a Tribute to Family
Bridget’s mother played a pivotal role in her success, offering unwavering support throughout the competition. Her mother’s presence at the final, alongside Nabila’s parents and the season’s previously eliminated contestants, made the moment even more special as they witnessed Bridget’s victory.
A Meal with Meaning: Mangwandi’s Winning Dish
For the final round, the top two contestants had to prepare a two-course meal that showcased African excellence. Bridget drew inspiration from her mother’s favorite recipe, Apricot Chicken, but with a twist—she replaced the chicken with kingklip. The dish symbolized her journey, incorporating everything she had learned throughout her time on MasterChef South Africa.
Bridget Mangwandi’s Inspirational Message
Bridget shared an inspiring message after her win, emphasizing that her victory was not only for her but for every young Black girl with big dreams. “This win is a victory not only for me but for every young Black girl who dreams of extraordinary feats. I hope this inspires the next generation to believe the world is their oyster, as I always tell myself,” she said in a statement.
