The future of Blockchain and AI in Africa.
LAGOS, Nigeria – Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has spotlighted the transformative potential of blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) as catalysts for Africa’s economic and social development.
In fact, speaking at the Africa Tech Alliance (AfriTECH 4.0) Forum in Lagos, Abdullahi emphasized that these technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to position Africa as a leader in the global digital economy.
“Africa’s potential in the digital age is boundless. By embracing blockchain and AI, we can create a future where technology drives economic growth, social inclusion, and sustainable development,” Abdullahi said in his keynote address, “Blockchain Technology & AI: Positioning Africa for the Future.”
He was represented by Mrs. Rita Shoremi, Head of Startup Innovations and IT Solutions, NITDA, South West Zone.
Blockchain and AI in Africa: A Digital Transformation in Motion
Furthermore, Abdullahi noted that Africa’s unique demographics and increasing digital adoption create a fertile ground for transformation.
With mobile penetration at 80% and over 60% of its population under 25, the continent is ripe for innovation.
Highlighting blockchain’s potential in the same way, Abdullahi explained how the technology could address persistent challenges in financial inclusion, governance, and property rights.
With over 57% of Africans unbanked, blockchain has the capacity to expand access to financial services, potentially adding $300 billion to Africa’s GDP by 2025.
“Blockchain’s ability to deliver transparency and efficiency is already being recognized globally. For Africa, it can combat corruption and secure land ownership through digital records, providing a foundation for trust and progress,” he remarked.
As well as that on AI, Abdullahi described it as a cornerstone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with the potential to transform key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education.
“AI-driven solutions are improving crop yields, bridging healthcare gaps with advanced diagnostics, and providing personalized education at scale,” he said, emphasizing the equally important role in addressing Africa’s infrastructural challenges.
Building for the Future
The NITDA DG called for supportive policies, strategic partnerships, and youth empowerment to unlock the full potential of these technologies.
Similarly, he highlighted NITDA’s eight-pillar strategy, which aims to achieve 70% digital literacy in Nigeria by 2027 and includes initiatives like the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.
“The focus on AI research, coupled with capacity-building efforts, is a deliberate move to equip young Nigerians with the skills to drive innovation.
AI is not just a tool; it is the force that will power Nigeria’s technological transformation,” Abdullahi explained.
Additionally, he urged African governments, private sector stakeholders, and innovators to collaborate and seize the opportunities presented by these technologies.
“We are not just spectators in the digital revolution; we are pioneers. Let us place Africa at the forefront of global innovation,” he declared.
Finally, Abdullahi concluded with a vision of a digitally empowered Africa, where technology bridges gaps, fosters inclusion, and propels the continent into a new era of prosperity.
“By embracing blockchain and AI, Africa can lead, not follow, in the global digital economy.”
Nonetheless, what steps do you think African nations should prioritize to fully harness the transformative power of blockchain and AI for sustainable growth?
