The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) officially commenced operations on January 1, 2025, as announced by the African Union’s Special Representative to Somalia, Mohamed El-Amine Souef.
AUSSOM succeeds the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), building upon its efforts to support Somalia in achieving lasting peace and security.
The mission’s mandate, outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024), focuses on assisting Somali security forces in assuming greater responsibility for maintaining peace and stability within the country.
A notable change in AUSSOM is the inclusion of Egypt as a contributing country, replacing Ethiopia following recent regional tensions. Egypt is expected to deploy its forces to Somalia via air and sea routes.
While AUSSOM has commenced operations, challenges remain. Burundi, a key contributor to ATMIS, has announced its withdrawal from the new mission, citing concerns regarding troop allocation.
