On February 1, 2025, a devastating attack on the Sabreen Market in Omdurman, Sudan, resulted in at least 54 fatalities and 158 injuries. Sudanese authorities and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have attributed the strike to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in the nation’s ongoing conflict. The RSF has denied responsibility for the attack.
Khaled Omar Youssef, a leader of the Progress Coordination Committee, condemned the shelling, labeling it a “full-fledged war crime” and calling for accountability for those responsible.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a brutal conflict between the RSF and the regular army, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and displacing over 12 million people. The ongoing violence has forced millions from their homes and brought half of the population to the brink of starvation.

MSF, which supports the Al Nao hospital in Omdurman, reported a mass casualty event following the attack. The organization condemned the violence, highlighting the devastating impact on civilians and the strain on medical facilities.
The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Sudan. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, voiced alarm over reports of summary executions and attacks on civilians, urging all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilian lives.
As the conflict continues, humanitarian organizations are calling for immediate action to prevent further loss of life and to address the dire needs of the Sudanese population. The situation remains critical, with millions in urgent need of assistance and protection.
