President Joe Biden’s three-day visit to Angola places the Angola Lobito Corridor project at the center of global discussions.
This transformative initiative aims to rehabilitate a 1,300-kilometer railway connecting Lobito on Angola’s coast to Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and northern Zambia.
The project will strengthen Africa’s position in the global green economy by concentrating on the transportation of vital minerals like copper and cobalt. 
Biden’s Angola Visit: A Push for the Lobito Corridor
During his visit, Biden highlighted the Angola Lobito Corridor project as a cornerstone of US-Africa relations. This initiative aligns with the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), a G7 strategy designed to counter China’s growing influence in Africa.
Biden’s focus on the corridor underscores its potential to secure critical resources essential for renewable energy technologies.
E.D. Wala Chabala, an independent economic consultant, noted:
“If the US maintains leadership in the green economy, it will secure its global market position. Otherwise, China could dominate.”
Why the Lobito Corridor Matters for Critical Minerals
The Angola Lobito Corridor project, by linking mineral-rich regions in Zambia and the DRC to the Atlantic port of Lobito, facilitates the efficient export of critical resources. Notably, these include copper and cobalt, which are vital for manufacturing batteries and advancing renewable energy solutions.
Alex Vines OBE, a research director, also noted:
“The Lobito Corridor demonstrates the West’s ability to deliver impactful infrastructure in Africa and showcases Angola’s strategic importance.”

Biden’s focus on the Angola Lobito Corridor project allegedly reflects a broader effort to counter China’s dominance in Africa’s infrastructure sector. The initiative strengthens ties with Angola while showcasing the US commitment to sustainable development in Africa.
However, political uncertainty looms as Donald Trump prepares to take office. Analysts warn that if the US withdraws support, European Union and African Development Bank investments might sustain the project.
Angola’s Foreign Policy and Strategic Relevance
Under President João Lourenço, Angola has shifted toward a pragmatic, multipolar foreign policy. This approach includes reducing dependency on China and strengthening ties with the US, the EU, and the Gulf nations.
Lourenço’s leadership also positions Angola as a mediator in regional conflicts and a contender for African Union chairpersonship in 2025.
