Angola has struck gas in its first dedicated gas exploration well off the country’s coast, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to diversify its energy sector, the National Oil, Gas, and Biofuels Agency (ANGP) announced late Friday.

The discovery was made in the Gajajeira-01 well, located in Block 1/14 within the Lower Congo Basin. Preliminary assessments indicate the find contains substantial volumes of natural gas and condensate, with estimates suggesting over 1 trillion cubic feet of gas and up to 100 million barrels of associated condensate.

The discovery strengthens Angola’s position as a growing player in Africa’s hydrocarbon industry. Historically reliant on oil, the country has been actively seeking to expand its gas resources to meet domestic demand and boost exports.

“This is a major step forward in our strategy to develop Angola’s gas potential,” said an ANGP spokesperson. “The results from Gajajeira-01 confirm the significant gas prospects in our offshore basins.”

Further analysis will be conducted to assess the commercial viability of the discovery. If confirmed, the find could lead to new investments in gas infrastructure, including potential liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.

Angola, Africa’s second-largest oil producer, has been working to attract foreign investment in its gas sector. The discovery could accelerate plans to monetize gas reserves, aligning with global energy transition trends favoring cleaner fuels.

The discovery adds to a series of major gas finds in Africa, including recent developments in Mozambique, Senegal, and Mauritania. As Europe seeks alternative gas supplies amid geopolitical shifts, Angola’s emerging gas sector could become an increasingly important supplier.

Industry analysts suggest that the successful development of the Gajajeira field could position Angola as a key gas exporter in the coming decade.

Angola’s government and energy stakeholders will closely monitor progress as the country moves closer to unlocking its gas potential.
