In a landmark moment for African sports, Cairo, Egypt has been selected to host the continent’s first-ever Flag Football Championships on June 20–21, 2025. The tournament, organized by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), marks Africa’s official entry into the global flag football scene and positions the continent as a critical player ahead of the sport’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Flag football, a non-contact variation of American football, is rapidly gaining popularity due to its accessibility, affordability, and youth appeal. This makes it especially suitable for Africa’s emerging sports landscape, where limited resources often hinder large-scale contact sports.

Twelve national teams—six men’s and six women’s—will compete in the championship, with top performers earning a place at the 2026 IFAF World Championships. The competition is part of IFAF’s global expansion strategy, aligning Africa with other continental events in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

NFL Africa Lead and Super Bowl champion Osi Umenyiora expressed excitement, calling it a “historic opportunity to inspire African youth and spotlight African talent on the world stage.” The NFL will also host youth engagement events and training camps in Cairo alongside the tournament to scout talent and foster grassroots participation.

Africa’s hosting of the inaugural Flag Football Championships is more than a sporting event—it’s a signal of growth, inclusion, and opportunity. As international eyes turn to Cairo this June, the continent prepares to make its mark in a game poised for Olympic greatness.
