Rising Violence – ADF Attack in DRC Claims Lives
At least 10 people lost their lives, and several others were abducted in a violent assault by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). ‘
Military spokesman Mak Hazukay confirmed the attack, which occurred Sunday night in the Batangi-Mbau area. The attackers also torched several homes, leaving families devastated and homeless.
“We urge the population to remain vigilant as we continue to push the enemy out of our territory,” Hazukay assured during a briefing.
The Growing Threat of ADF Rebels
The ADF, an extremist group linked to the Islamic State, has ramped up its attacks across North Kivu and Ituri provinces in recent years. Sunday’s incident is part of an alarming pattern, with the group frequently targeting villages and leaving behind trails of destruction. Earlier this month, the ADF killed 13 individuals in a separate attack on another North Kivu village.
Civil society leader Katuho Kinos reported an even higher death toll from this latest assault, estimating at least 14 fatalities, with search efforts ongoing. “The figures might increase as we continue to assess the situation,” he stated.
Escalating Crisis in Eastern DRC
Eastern DRC remains one of the most conflict-ridden regions in the world, with over 120 armed groups vying for control of land and mineral resources. The ADF, founded in Uganda during the 1990s, has been particularly lethal, declaring allegiance to the Islamic State in 2017.
The situation has prompted joint military operations by Uganda and the DRC since 2021, yet the violence persists. The United Nations and human rights groups have consistently reported ADF atrocities, including the killing and abduction of children.
The ongoing ADF attack in the DRC demonstrates the pressing necessity for more robust measures to safeguard civilians and deal with the North Kivu humanitarian situation. The violence in eastern DRC has resulted in the displacement of about 7 million people.
Will increased military efforts and international support bring peace to the region, or will the cycle of violence continue?
