A catastrophic fire erupted at the Kantamanto Market in Accra around 1:00 a.m., leaving a trail of destruction and devastating countless traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods.
The inferno consumed hundreds of shops and property worth millions of Ghana cedis, with traders scrambling to salvage whatever they could from the wreckage. As emergency teams continue their efforts to contain the flames, the exact extent of the damage remains uncertain.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
Thirteen fire tenders were dispatched to the scene as firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. Pockets of flames continued to smolder even hours later, while distressed traders struggled to come to terms with their losses.
Some traders have expressed frustration with the response, with Mr. Kwabena Charles, a second-hand shoe dealer, lamenting, “I’ve lost goods worth nearly 500 million Ghana cedis. The fire service didn’t do anything to help.”

NADMO Pledges Support for Affected Traders
Mr. Richard Amo Yartey, Director of Inspectorate at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), visited the scene and assured traders of the agency’s commitment to helping them rebuild.
“It’s unfortunate that this happened as we approach the New Year, but it’s not the end. We’re working to support those affected and ensure they get back on their feet,” he said.
NADMO has already begun assessing the damage and registering affected persons to tailor their support. Market leaders from the Traders Association are involved in the process to ensure transparency.
“We’ve set up a desk for registration and assessment. Once all the information is gathered, we’ll create an action plan to aid recovery,” Mr. Yartey added.
Traders Appeal for Help
The incident has left many traders financially crippled, with most losing their entire capital. Appeals for government and charitable support are pouring in as the community grapples with the aftermath of the disaster.
Recurring fire outbreaks at the Kantamanto Market have raised concerns among traders, with some suspecting arson as a potential cause. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.

A Call for Calm Amidst Crisis
While emotions run high, NADMO has urged traders and residents to remain calm, pledging swift action to provide aid and restore hope.
This tragic event serves as a harsh reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by bustling markets and the need for preventive measures against such disasters.
The investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing, and updates will follow as more details emerge.
