Incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport

Operations at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja came to an abrupt halt today after an Allied Air Cargo aircraft skidded off Runway 22.

The incident, which occurred at 10:05 a.m., prompted an immediate closure of the airport’s runway to ensure safety and facilitate recovery efforts.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the development in a statement, reassuring the public of safety measures in place. Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, stated:

“The Airport Emergency Response Team is on the scene along with accident investigators. The runway is being cleared and is expected to reopen for operations as soon as possible.”

No Injuries Reported

Despite the potentially dangerous situation, all five individuals on board were safely evacuated. FAAN confirmed that no injuries were recorded, and the evacuees were taken to the FAAN clinic for precautionary medical evaluations.

Mrs. Orah also urged the public and aviation stakeholders to avoid speculation until the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) releases its preliminary report.

Significant Disruptions to Flight Schedules

The closure of the runway caused delays in both departures and arrivals, affecting multiple flights and leaving passengers stranded. Authorities are working to clear the runway and restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.

A source at the airport described the scene, stating, “Efforts are ongoing to reopen the runway. The aircraft is stuck near the runway, and we are coordinating recovery operations to tow it away.”

Aviation Safety Under Scrutiny

The incident has brought attention to safety protocols and emergency response measures within Nigeria’s aviation sector. With investigators on-site, the NSIB is expected to provide insights into the cause of the incident and recommendations to prevent future occurrences.

As operations are gradually restored, FAAN has expressed gratitude to the aviation community and the general public for their patience and cooperation during the disruption.
